God Loving People or God Fearing People

Yesterday I watched a Bollywood/Indian movie, “OMG – Oh My God” again. The movie shows our blind faith in the Religion and God. In the climax, a character says that we are not God-loving people, but we are God-fearing people. I am not much aware about the other countries. However, here in India, you can see many people are like that.

I am not an expert on spirituality and but I would definitely like to share my views with you. It is about the relationship with God.

Each of our actions derived either by fear or by love. We do jobs because either we love doing it or we have the fear of survival. Think about any of the activity of your life, you will see fear or love behind that. This is not only true for our life events, but also true for our faith in God as well.

Some remember and worship God because they love them. However, most of us worship God because they are full of fear and afraid of God. We fear that if god becomes angry with me, I will have to suffer loss in life.

Relationship with God:

What kind of relationship you have with God. Some of us see him as an almighty and powerful, so we fear from him. Some see him as a father even some see as a friend. So they love him.

There are two kinds of people in this world: God fearing people and God loving people. What kind of person you are? Let us see:

God Fearing People:

Unfortunately, most of us fall into this category. We do not do it consciously, but we fear God. We fear that if we do not please god, he will spoil our life. God can, but why he will do it. It is our karma.

“As you sow, so shall you reap”

Why god will do something bad for those who do well? Why we need to fear?

I always see people who passing by a spiritual place. They stop for a while and pray to God. Many of them do it because of their faith in God. They ask for blessings from God, which I believe is good.

However, many people do this just because they fear. They fear that if I do not do it, God will punish me. I believe that is not true. God would never want us to remember because of fear, but because of love. A relationship full of fear is never a healthy relationship.

Sometimes we even do business with God. I have heard people, “God, just get me that brand new car by lottery, I will donate that much money”

Oh God, we even give bribe to you. You will find many students saying, “God, just help me pass the math exam and I will do that for you”.

Religions have their customs and they have their values. But, do you think that it is right to beg for the things to god. Should we offer/donate something to God with that intention? No.

Why we should not fear from God:

Why we need to fear from him? He never wants us to be afraid of him. If we see God as our father, do we need to fear from our father? What kind of relationship will be there if a father threatens his son? It will never last long.

“For prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God.” ~ Saint Teresa of Avila

If you do the right things, you should not be feared God. Instead, we must love and respect God. He himself is an ocean of love.

God Loving People:

Only a few of us treat god as a companion or guardian. Only some see him as a friend or father. If you love God, you should keep that kind of close relationship with God.

Love unconditionally:

Pure love is unconditional. If you truly believe in God, love him unconditionally. See him as a supreme power that not only drives us, but also love us. If you want to remember him, talk to him. Talk to him with love, as you are a child. Believe me; God also loves to interact with us.

“God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say: thank you?”  ~ William Arthur Ward

Make this world better:

Rather than offering such money or other things to God, offer to someone who really need it. I would also say that rather than offering money/material things to the needy, make them stand on their own feet. God will bless you. Why do not we leave a better world behind us.

Respect your traditions and customs, but use own wisdom as well. Check what the meaning of spirituality is for you.  Next time when you remember God, discover whether you are God fearing or God loving.

Hey Deepak! This is an interesting perspective that offers valid points. I wanted to offer some further insight on the importance of having both fear and love for God. Both fear, meaning respect, and love are important in a personal relationship with God. We are first His servants, which means He is our Master and so we have reverence for him. His unconditional love for us is the reason why we love and need Him. Having a true relationship with God involves being God-fearing (respecting) and God-Loving. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that fear is not of God, so anyone who is afraid of God does not understand the true meaning of what it is to fellowship with Him.
